Coupons

I sent this letter to the editor of the Chronicle this morning. It is in response to an article about how much shoppers can save using coupons…
I would like to add a point to your article about using coupons to save money on groceries. Food coupons are typically for highly processed foods. Unrefined, fresh foods are less likely to have coupons but are considered to be healthier. Unrefined foods are recommended for weight loss which is associated with improvements in diabetes, high blood pressure, and cholesterol. So, if coupons lead consumers to buy more refined foods, they might consider adding in the costs of treating any diet-related conditions they may have.
We already have so many temptations to use refined foods. Coupons are another.
